Hydrogen production and transfer in the rumen
نویسندگان
چکیده
Hydrogen is a central metabolite in rumen fermentation and its partial pressure is an important determinant of rumen methanogenesis. The balance of hydrogen ion (H+) and dissolved hydrogen gas (H2) concentrations directly determine the redox potential of the rumen and therefore the possible extent of oxidation of feedstuffs. Differential permeability of the bacterial membrane to H+ and H2 means the proportions of these metabolites in the extracellular fluid will differ from their proportions within the bacterium. Interpretation of extracellular H2 concentration in the bulk fluid is also complicated by interspecies hydrogen transfer among H2 producing and utilising rumen organisms which live in close physical (syntrophic) associations. The role of H2 concentration in determining the array of fermentation products and the efficiency of energy capture by rumen organisms is discussed. Developing a greater understanding of rumen hydrogen metabolism may present new opportunities for the control of rumen methanogenesis. Hydrogen production and transfer in the rumen

The effect of substituting native grass with jengkol (Archidendron jiringa) by-product on fermentation characteristics, rumen microbial profile, methane production, and hydrogen balance using in vitro method was investigated. Seven treatments (different composition of native grass, jengkol peel, jengkol leaves, and concentrate) with five replications in a block randomized desi...
متن کاملThe Effects of Use Medicinal Plants on Rumen Fermentation Parameters in Ruminants
Rumen is a persistent and specific ecosystem consists of bacteria, protozoa and fungus where feed fermentation takes place in it. Produced Hydrogen in rumen can be used in the synthesis of the volatile fatty acids and the microbial protein and its excess would be eliminated through the production of Methane by methanogenesis. Nutritionists have tried to find ways to decrease loss and energy and...

متن کاملPerformance of Biological hydrogen Production Process from Synthesis Gas, Mass Transfer in Batch and Continuous Bioreactors
Biological hydrogen production by anaerobic bacterium, Rhodospirillum rubrum was studied in batch and continuous bioreactors using synthesis gas (CO) as substrate. The systems were operated at ambient temperature and pressure. Correlations available in the literature were used to estimate the gas-liquid mass transfer coefficients (KLa) in batch reactor. Based on experimental results for the con...
متن کاملGenetic Transformation of Amylase Gene to Ruminal Bacteroides Species Using Conjugation Consequence for Improvement of Rumen Enzyme
Rumen bacterial strains can potentially be manipulated to perform functions different from wild type species. The most numerous species of bacteria in the rumen and gut are species of the familyBacteroidetes, whichcan have the potential for genetic modification for enzyme production. One of the genetic manipulation of rumen bacteria can perform for production of starch digestive enzyme for the ...
